A growing concern today, going on 6 months since the terror attacks, is the way we have become acclimated to the increases in surveillance and invasion of our privacy. Once the network & infrastructure of surveillance technology is set up will the next President have the diligence to dismantle it? Would the NSA & CIA even allow it to be dismantled through pressure at the highest levels? Does the war on terrorism have an end? Will we care or even remember the way we have come?
They say if you have nothing to hide then you have nothing to fear. But we all have something to hide and that is our imperfections which we know that if others knew, they could exploit them for their own gain. The person or group who wants to catch you in violation of a technicality of the law so they can be rewarded for pointing you out. Everything from juggling credit card debts to being identified as a supporter for this group or that and then being denied employment because the company you applied at opposes that group on some philosophical level. And those are just the more "civil" abuses.
Widespread surveillance opens the floodgates to dissemination of information to wealthy entities who would pay for it. It was invasive enough before 9-11. Now where will it end?
Do you believe the government has enough integrity to keep all they find confidential. Oh yes, do you even remember that before 9-11 invasion of privacy was an issue. Are you even aware of the shifting baseline? Do you long for a return to that time when we were less watched on the descending stairwell of freedom? Three steps down and one step back up and we think we are alright, unaware of the shifting baseline.
All citizens should oppose this invasion of privacy. It is your duty as an American to put downward pressure on the rise of increased government surveillance. The Government does not need your support on this, but it does need your admonition of when enough is enough. It has been 6 months. You cannot live in a super safe and serene world. You have not and will not. Your liberty is more important than the face of the "real" world. The founding fathers thought so and they lived under British terror and attack.
Instead of giving up their rights for their lives they secured hard fought for rights with their lives. Have we lost that or in the name of peace, safety and security will we walk through as the cell door locks behind us? The answer is up to us.
In the name of peace, safety and security will you walk through as the cell door locks behind us?
