Jesus Said "An Eye for an Eye" is Wrong.
Jesus said: "You have heard that it has been said, an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth, but I say to you, Love your enemies, do good to them that hate you."
You may say that does not apply to national defense but never mind about defending the president or your country, when the soldiers came to take Jesus, the Lord of the universe, the King of the Kingdom of God told his followers to lay down their swords and not defend Him by saying "He who lives by the sword will die by the sword". Can you justify defending a president or a nation when even the Lord Jesus would not have you defend even him with violence?
You may say that Jesus HAD to go to the cross, but He could have said many other things to stop Peter and go on to the cross and He could have made the sword comment " He who lives by the sword will die by the sword" in a purely civil context but he did not. He said it when encountering the military of Rome. In scripture, context is everything.
Do not lower the standard because you find it hard to live by. Rejecting the teachings of Jesus in order to support President Bush or any President or justify life in this country is a sorry trade-off by any measure.
