Romney and the Republicans were shell-shocked by Obama's victory primarily for one reason; they live in a conservative media echo chamber at odds with reality. The pure evidence of their mentality that never considers the reason and common sense of mainstream America is blatantly in the fact that they were so shocked not to have won even with national polls outside the rightwing fantasy world showing the race neck and neck and Obama leading in battle ground states across the board. Mitt Romney didn't even have a concession speech ready which was embarrassingly revealed to the nation in the election night's coverage. On top of that they had to cancel $25,000 worth of red white and blue fireworks to celebrate a Romney victory.
The rightwing Republicans and religious right never consider anything outside their media echo chamber of Fox News and it's false prophet pundits Limbaugh, Beck and Hannity. That is all these people ever hear so that when the news that Obama had won and won big came out they were floored, they couldn't believe it. Even with the polls so close all along till the end they were so sure they were the winners because the conservative media echo chamber had been telling them all along how right they were and how wrong the Democrats were leaving the conservative mind with no other reality or logical conclusion that could exist under such perceptions except that victory is the only concievable possibility. Keeping their ears in a constant state of tickle and their poor selves protected in the rightwing bubble they hear nothing except their side of the story, pandered to and stroked with same like opinions every day and every way they turn. Such people putting themselves in a cult-like state of mind have no business running an entire nation in any event.
It has long been the nature of the rightwing to shut out anyone that disagrees with them but it is necessary because their belief is based on a deeply guilt ridden ideology of getting for oneself all one can get despite the price to others. Any disruption or questioning of the ideology will break off the whitened plaster that covers it exposing the reality of their dark self-serving money serving ideology to themselves. Just as with groups of criminals you never question why you are in on the crime once you begin and so it must be a matter of total allegiance in suppressing any guilt.
Their conscience is not suspended and the guilt of the crime lies waiting to be released so those that are seared are those relegated with the duty of prolonging the deception by shutting out any opposing views that could cause even the smallest fissure in their corrupt thinly shelled belief system.
It is just like religious cults that know a whole world of truth waits outside for them so the only way to survive is to shut it all out.
